TAWAU: Tawau MP Datuk Christina Liew has called for the urgent sealing of Jalan Sin On Tiku in Balung here to improve road connectivity in the constituency.
She said the sealed road would bring socio-economic benefits to the oil-palm smallholders in the area.
“The unconducive condition of Jalan Sin On Tiku poses a problem and affects the daily livelihood of the smallholders and the village community.
“For their convenience, I will discuss the pressing need for sealing the earth road with the State Minister of Works. We are now in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), and this particular stretch has yet to be tarred even after 58 years of independence,” she told reporters after inspecting the road together with Lawrence Chen Yun Min, who represented 70 smallholders, on Friday.

According to Liew, Jalan Sin On Tiku turns muddy and becomes impassable to vehicles during the wet season, causing economic hardship and losses as the smallholders can’t gain access to their plots of land. “I am given to understand that the people have tolerated this situation for decades,” she said.
During the site visit, she received a letter of application for the sealing of the road from Chen.
Also present were personnel from the Tawau Parliamentary People’s Service Centre.
Earlier, Chen briefed the Tawau MP on the difficulties faced by the smallholders and rural folks as the poor condition of the road hinders them from carrying out agricultural activities and managing their smallholdings well.
