BEAUFORT: Chairperson of the PKR State Leadership Council (MPN Sabah), Datuk Christina Liew visited several locations to present food aid to families affected by the flash floods here, Monday.
She handed out some 300 food packs to flood victims at Kg Takuli, Kg Limbawang and during her visit to evacuees at the temporary evacuation centre housed at Dewan DSP Mohd Dun Banir.
The Sabah PKR Chief also contributed 1,200 bottles of 1.5-litre mineral water.
Liew, who is also Api Api Assemblywoman and Tawau MP, also took a look at the situation at Kg Cina, one of the many villages struck by the floods, where she met with Chinese community leaders.
She was accompanied by MPN Sabah members, including Putatan MP Awang Husaini Sahari, Inanam Assemblyman Peto Galim, Sabah PKR Vice-Chairman Datuk John Ghani and Abdul Rahman Md Yakub.

Also present were PKR Beaufort Branch Head Dikin Hj Musah, Branch Welfare Bureau Head Rudiah Said and Grace Lee from the Api Api DUN Office. She advised the flood victims to take extra precautions and be on the alert for any danger or health problem that may arise from the flood occurrence as it is happening in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Take good care of your children and elderly parents, especially during this critical period. Keep clean and boil your drinking water. Go out only when necessary. Wear your masks when you go out but avoid the crowded places,” she told them.
Meanwhile, Liew urged the relevant departments to seriously look into the issue of perennial floods plaguing the residents of Beaufort for decades.
“Please do something to mitigate the situation before the next deluge hits the district again. Flash floods have become a recurring problem and incurring huge losses in Beaufort for generations dating back to the seventies.
“Such woes jeopardise the people’s livelihood and disrupt economic activities as well as businesses,” she said.
At this juncture, Liew called on the State Government to expedite implementation of the proposal to deepen the Padas River.
In January this year, it was reported that the Government was considering a proposal to deepen and straighten the Padas River through sand dredging as a measure to overcome the frequent flooding there.
