TAWAU: Tawau MP Datuk Christina Liew has called on flouters of the COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) under the Movement Control Order 2.0 (MCO 2.0) to discard their ‘tidak apa’ attitude.

She made the call during her visit to a number of mosques in her constituency to hand out rice supplies and prayer mats on Friday. These are located at Kg Rancangan Bt 22, PPRT Balung, Kg Perpaduan Bt 24, Balung Cocos, Cek Point Bt 32, Kg Inderasabah Pengkalan, Kg Inderasabah Darat and Kg Kinabutan Tiku.

The former Deputy Chief Minister was accompanied on her rounds by the Tawau Parliamentary Chief Liaison Officer, Fung Thin Yein.

“I am surprised at the poor compliance with the SOPs set by the Government, despite warnings and reminders from the authorities.

There are people who choose to take the pandemic lightly by ignoring the SOPs and defying quarantine orders.”It’s not worth exposing yourselves unnecessarily to the risk of infection. Stick to the stay-at-home order unless you need to go out to buy food essentials or visit the hospital in emergency cases.”If people continue to violate the SOPs, the infectivity rate is likely to rise, and we cannot achieve the Health Ministry’s projection of a two-digit daily tally of new COVID-19 cases for the country by May this year,” Liew cautioned.

Speaking to the people, she reminded the communities to adhere to the SOPs by wearing face masks and maintaining physical distancing when they are in public, and washing their hands frequently.

“The face mask must be worn properly. Have you heard of the story where a couple got infected with the virus within two minutes of having a chat with someone at a close distance, simply because they were not wearing their face masks correctly?” she asked.

Liew, who is also Api Api Assemblywoman, was commenting on a media report that over 400 compounds had been issued by the Tawau District Health Office for SOP violations since the imposition of MCO in March last year.

According to the Tawau District Health Officer, Dr G. Navindran, the people’s failure to comply with the SOPs has caused the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the community.

Meanwhile, Fung said the Tawau MP’s dinner gathering with the Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and the scheduled dinner with PKR Tawau leaders and Malay community leaders have been postponed until further notice.
