Local community must cooperate with ESSCOM, says Liew

TAWAU: Tawau MP Datuk Christina Liew welcomed the assurance that  the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) will not be closed but will be further strengthened. The former Deputy Chief Minister said this is good news for the populace in the district who feel reassured of their personal safety.


“The presence of ESSCOM as a government agency makes the people feel safe while going about their daily life activities.We are also happy to learn that  ESSCOM is planning to bring the agency closer to the people as the common good approach. ” It is only right that the community cooperate with our security forces for maintaining peace in the region,” Liew said in a statement, Wednesday.


She was commenting on ESSCOM Chief Executive Officer Dr Jamaluddin Mohd Ali’s recent statement that the agency will not  be closed but will be strengthened and empowered.


Liew congratulated ESSCOM on its anniversary celebration that will be held today (Thursday) to commemorate the sacrifices of the fallen heroes in defending the country’s sovereignty in the terrorist attack in 2013.


ESSCOM was established on April 1, 2013, following the intrusion of Sulu terrorists in Tanduo, Lahad Datu.The agency is responsible for coordinating the operations of the security and defence agencies such as the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency in maintaining the safety of Sabahans in ESSZONE.


ESSZONE is a security area that covers Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau.
