KOTA KINABALU: The all-ladies Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl (RCKK Pearl) has played a significant role in raising rural pupils’ level of proficiency in the English language, said Api Api State Assemblywoman Datuk Christina Liew.

She singled out the Cub’s signature project, Project REAL (Rural English For All) as a laudable initiative (in collaboration with the State Education Department), which has contributed to children’s improved English literacy in selected rural schools over the years.

“Although RCKK Pearl is only five years old, it has notched a good track record of community services. I am proud of the Club’s achievements amidst these challenging times.”For Project REAL, medical outreach programmes, eyesight conservation and environmentally-focused projects, the Pearls have earned much-coveted Rotary awards and citations,” she said when officiating at the recent installation of the 6th President of RCKK Pearl, Kapitan Eliza Goh by her predecessor, Datin Dr Sharifah Habsah Habib Alawi at the Sabah International Convention Centre.

In this respect, Liew, a former Deputy Chief Minister, commended Past Presidents (Charter President Datuk Adeline Leong, Datuk Noni Said, Datuk Suzannah Liaw and Datin Dr Tarsiah Taman) and their teams for their continued commitment and dedication.

The guest of honour witnessed the installation of Goh conducted by former District 3310 Governor, Philip Chong while that of the new Board of Directors (2020-2021) was executed by former District 3310 Assistant Governor, Iskandar Ahmad.

Liew noted that the outgoing BOD led by Dr Sharifah had also successfully collaborated with international Rotary Clubs in a project to provide clean water supply and toilet facilities under the club’s Water and Sanitation Programme, for SK Kawiyan, a rural primary school in Ranau.

“I understand that this new project will be carried out in phases to ultimately provide clean water to other villages surrounding the school area,” she said.
Congratulating Goh and her Board of Directors (BOD), Liew said:

“Despite the current restrictions enforced by the current Covid-19 pandemic, I am confident that under your leadership, RCKK Pearl will adapt to the new norm and continue your Club’s tradition of providing meaningful social services for the benefit of the community.”I wish the Board new opportunities in your ‘Service to Humanity’ in the face of adversity. I believe your Club will have yet another fruitful year.”

Earlier, in her maiden address, Goh said that as President, her vision is to empower young women entrepreneurs to be bold and widen their horizon to improve their businesses and lives by tapping into new technologies and markets for their products and services.

“I can see that our community has many innovative and talented young entrepreneurs who will be able to transform themselves into successful individuals, given the right support and guidance that our club can impart,” she added.
