LABUAN: Junior Chamber International (JCI) Labuan has won 10 awards of various categories including the first-ever participation in the English Public Speaking Contest and Parliamentary Quiz in the just-concluded JCI Malaysia Area Sabah Virtual Convention 2020.
The three-day convention from Aug 14-16 which was held virtually via Zoom and Facebook was to allow the Sabah and Labuan JCI to recognise the achievements of active JCI divisions (Local Organisations- [LOs] and members who continuously serve actively and positively to their respective communities.
At least six members led Labuan JCI (local) president, Bernice Chin-Langshaw contested for the awards of Best Social Media Management Award, Most Active Material Submissions to Area Newsletter, Largest Delegation to 2020 JCIM Leadership Summit, English Debate Contest and Most Participative President which was won Bernice Chin-Langshaw.
Other awards JCI Labuan won were Most Outstanding Report by Bernice Chin-Langshaw, Public Speaking Contest (English) – 1st Runner Up also by Bernice Chin-Langshaw, English Debate Contest – Best Debater by Caris Teo, Parliamentary Quiz won by Jefery Tan and Active New Member Award by Mohd Nazari Arapan.
“Our winning in the English Public Speaking Contest and Parliamentary Quiz, it was a milestone for JCI Labuan as it was the first time we took part and won,” Bernice said.
The JCI Labuan English speaking contest team winning the award comprised of Bernice Chin-Langshaw as the captain and Caris Teo Yen Lui and Angel Naomi Tolentino as the first and second speakers.
JCI Labuan’s winning debate against the motion of ‘Gender Equality Should be Based on Ideology than Real Pragmatism’, won them a spot to represent Sabah in the JCI Malaysia National Convention (NatCon) in October.
JCI Labuan first speaker, Caris Teo Yen Lui also bagged the Best Debater Award. Team Captain, Bernice noted that this was an impressive win, as all the three participants inckhdin herself were first timers and had never participated in any debating previously.
“However, they are all ecstatic with this achievement, not only for making history for JCI Labuan, but also for having the opportunity to represent Sabah at the national level,” Bernice said.
