KOTA KINABALU: The Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese Lunar Calendar holds promises of hope, progress and prosperity, says Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Christina Liew.
In her Chinese New Year message, she said : “I believe the worst of it all is over (Covid-19 pandemic), and it is time to rebuild our flagging economy.
“2023 is predicted to be a year of hope as this zodiac animal (rabbit) is a symbol of hope, good luck and prosperity in Chinese Culture.
“So, as we usher in the Year of the Rabbit, we will face the economic challenges ahead with a positive outlook, dynamism and strong resilience in seeking viable solutions.
“And given the nature of this Water Rabbit, it also symbolises longevity, peace and harmony which is vital for oneness of our plural society. I wish everyone ‘Happy Chinese New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai’.”
On a similar note, Liew, who is also Api-Api Assemblywoman, said the Chinese New Year celebration is not only for the Tionghua community but also for all other races of diverse cultures in the spirit of unity.
“Unity in diversity is what is unique about Sabah and her people, and we have preserved this distinct feature for decades,” she added.
Liew is optimistic that 2023 will be a prosperous year for Malaysia in general and Sabah in particular “as we reopen our doors to international tourists from various countries, especially those from China, towards achieving a sustainable economy.”
“Let us make the most of this year’s opportunities awaiting us out there. Our goal is attainable if all stakeholders play their role effectively to rejuvenate the industry and maintain Sabah’s reputation as a premier tourist destination,” said the minister, adding that Malaysia and Sabah are among tourism hotspots in the world.
