TAWAU: The existing bridge at Kg Kurnia Jaya in the Apas State Constituency here will be rebuilt with belian wood, said Member of Parliament for Tawau, Datuk Christina Liew.
She made the announcement after her inspection of the bridge on Saturday afternoon.
According to her, the bridge was earlier built with bakau (mangrove) wood by the villagers on a gotong royong basis.
“However, a 50-foot stretch was found to be unstable. For the people’s safety, we have decided to replace it with belian which is more durable,” said Liew who was accompanied by Kapitan Cina Chin ChongMin, Tawau Parliamentary Chief Liaison Officer, Fung Thin Yein, Liaison Officer Robert Penggai and Tawau Parliamentary People’s Service Centre Secretary Stevan Chan.
She also disclosed that four other new bridges have recently been completed, one at Kg Kurnia Jaya and three others at Kg Sri Aman in a neighbouring area.
