Flashback to June 23, 2020…Liew visiting the Prince Philip Park
KOTAÂ KINABALU: Former Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew reiterated her call to the Government for the restoration of Prince Philip Park to its old glory. The Api Api Assemblywoman said it is regrettable that the historical park has been neglected and relegated to its present pathetic condition.
According to her, she had visited Prince Philip Park and Tanjung Aru Beach on June 23, 2020 during her tenure, and recommended that the existing structures, including the entrance platform, and facilities be repaired or upgraded for the benefit of locals and tourists alike.Â
Liew had also wanted the public toilet to be upgraded while calling for additional toilets to be built in the area. Given the popularity of the Tanjung Aru Beach with tourists particularly from China and Korea, she had repeated her suggestion that a proper shed be put up to shelter visitors in the event of bad weather.
“It is vital to project a good image of Prince Philip Park and Tanjung Aru Beach for word-of-mouth marketing,” she was quoted as saying during her visit after the Park was reopened to the public. It had been closed for some time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In her statement on Monday, Liew said many KK residents have nostalgia for Prince Philip Park which is an ideal place to visit and relax during weekends and holidays.Â
“Authorities and or any entities which have control over the Park should make a serious effort to refurbish the facility and bring it back to its former glory. Only then will it draw international tourists as a ‘must-visit’ destination when Malaysia reopens its air borders.”We hope the management of the Park will be returned to Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) once restoration works have been completed,” she said.
