KOTA KINABALU, Sabah, Malaysia – The BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games 2026 is positioned as a platform for regional unity and youth empowerment, with Sabah reaffirming its commitment to sports development and cross-border cooperation.
The Sabah Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy (MySpaCe) Minister Datuk Haji Nizam bin Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Abu Bakar Titingan, said the Games go beyond competition, serving as a meaningful avenue to foster friendships and goodwill among member countries of the BIMP-EAGA: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
“With the participation of more than 3,000 athletes and officials, this Games truly reflects the spirit of regional unity and togetherness that we deeply value,” he said.
He noted that the Games feature athletes under the age of 21 competing in nine disciplines, including athletics, swimming, badminton and sepak takraw, as well as e-sports, reflecting the evolving landscape of youth engagement.
“Sport is a powerful vehicle for shaping character, instilling discipline and nurturing resilience among our youth,” he said, adding that the State Government remains steadfast in advancing youth and sports as key drivers of social progress and economic growth.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, who is also the organising chairman, Datuk Mansur Asun expressed appreciation for the trust placed in him to helm the organising committee, describing the opportunity as both an honour and a responsibility.
He reiterated the State Government’s strong commitment to youth development through sports, noting that such platforms play a vital role in nurturing leadership, discipline and a strong sense of identity among young people.
“We firmly believe that sport is a powerful unifying force. Through an event such as this, we are able to foster closer ties among BIMP-EAGA member countries while strengthening regional cooperation that contributes meaningfully to both social cohesion and economic progress,” he said.
Mansur said Sabah is honoured to host this year’s edition of the Games, with extensive preparations undertaken to ensure its smooth and successful delivery.
“It is our sincere hope that this event will not only be successful in its execution, but will also leave a meaningful and lasting impact on all participants,” he added, encouraging stakeholders to share feedback to further improve future editions.
Competitions will be held at several venues across the state capital, including the Likas Sports Complex and the Likas Aquatic Centre, as well as selected community halls and sports facilities.
Both Nizam and Mansur also welcomed participants to experience Sabah’s cultural diversity and natural beauty, expressing hope that the Games would leave lasting memories beyond the field of competition.
While acknowledging the competitive spirit of the event, Nizam emphasised that sportsmanship, discipline and mutual respect remain at its core, with friendships and shared experiences ultimately defining its true value. The BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games 2026 is expected to further strengthen regional cooperation while promoting youth development through sport.
