TAWAU: Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for P190 Tawau Datuk Christina Liew repeated her call to the State Government to provide funds to the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) for urgent rectification work
on the huge concrete beam which is badly cracked with exposed corrosive steel bars at the Pasar Tanjung Tawau (Tawau Tanjung Market).
The market is housed at the UTC building in Sri Tanjung here.
Liew, who is the incumbent MP, made the call on Friday for the second time after visiting the market on her campaign trail.
As she shook hands with the stall operators, many expressed their fear that the structural damage may cause the beam to collapse one day if left unattended.
“I am concerned for the safety of hawkers and vendors as well as visitors to the central market. Actually, I had first inspected the beam together with the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) engineer Sim Kwang Heng on April 25 this year.
“Then and there, I had urged the Ministry of Local Government and Housing to take prompt action to address the problem but until today, no repair work has been carried out. We do not want any untoward incidents to happen at the market,” Liew told reporters after the visit.
According to her, a technical forensic engineer must be engaged to assess the extent of the beam damage and to determine whether the market building is safe for occupation.
