KOTA KINABALU: Some 500 people from the B40 communities, single mothers, the physically disabled and the elderly have started receiving food baskets (rice and other food essentials) from The Society of Hope Sabah under its Food Aid programme.

Its President Josephine Hadikusumo said the programme was sponsored by WWF COVID-19 Rapid Relief, and The Society began its distribution work on Wednesday.

Among the recipients were disabled persons (OKU) from Persatuan Orang Kerdil, Sabah Society for the Deaf and Independent Living Centre Cheshire Home; single mothers under the care of Good Shepherd Sisters; B40 community from Stella Maris Convent for Retired Nuns, Loreto Convent and the Carmelite Monastery; and B40 and single mothers under the auspices of Masjid Sembulan and Masjid Kinarut Laut.

“In collaboration with WWF – Malaysia Sabah, we selected 500 recipients who met the criteria for assistance.

We hope to meet the immediate needs of communities financially impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions,” she said.

According to Hadikusumo, this is an expansion of The Society’s Milk Powder distribution programme which began in 2020.

“Unlike our Milk Programme which was spread out across multiple districts, the recipients for the Food Aid are in the Kota Kinabalu and Penampang area. The second half of the beneficiaries, who live in Penampang and comprise mainly B40 income-earners and senior citizens, will get their share next week,” she said.

Meanwhile, Hadikusumo called on interested donors to partner with the Society and donate to its worthy cause at the following account.

“Donations to The Society of Hope Sabah are tax-deductible for donors and we are able to provide receipts for that purpose,” she said.
