Tawau MP rushes to scene of fire

TAWAU:  Tawau MP Datuk Christina Liew rushed to the scene of the fire outbreak at Batu 2, Lorong Haji Sundu, Jalan Apas after officiating at the Peka B40 health screening programme at 10am at the Community Centre here.

Firemen were still fighting the fire before the operation ended at 11am. The Fire and Rescue Services Department received a distress call at 9.37am.

Two houses were razed to the ground while four other houses were 30pc damaged and a taxi was 10pc burnt. The nearby Masjid Al Munawarah was also partially damaged.

There were no casualties but a woman, who fainted, was sent to the hospital by police.

Liew, who managed to talk to one of the families who lost their home in the incident, was told by a family member that the fire could have been started by children playing with matchsticks, and then spread to other houses.

Speaking to reporters, she said she would wait for the official report from the Department of Welfare Services before deciding on the form of assistance for the fire victims.”My liaison officers at the Tawau Parliamentary People’s Service Centre will be monitoring the situation,” she said.

The MP also advised the people to be more vigilant as their houses are in close proximity, while cautioning them against illegal electricity connection as this is unlawful and dangerous.
