Semporna needs a Tourism Hospital: James

SEMPORNA: Foreign investors and government linked companies (GLCs) are welcome to build a Tourism Hospital in this district to facilitate tourists to get faster treatment.

Sabah Community Development and People’s Wellbeing Minister, Datuk James bin Ratib said, with the existence of a Tourism Hospital here, tourists no longer need to crowd the Government Hospital to seek treatment.

“You know our hospital is not comparable to their (foreign tourists) hospital.

“So I welcome the investors and also the government’s GLCs to build a tourism hospital, even if it is small, especially for tourists from abroad,” he said.

James, who is also the Sugut Assemblyman, said this to the media after visiting Semporna Hospital on Monday.

Meanwhile, he also stated that some other matters related to medical services here need to be given attention to.

According to him, the hospital needs to be equipped with 10 dialysis machines, and two new operating rooms.

This is necessary, he said, because Semporna Hospital currently only has one operating room that has been used for 54 years.

According to Semporna Hospital Director, Dr Wan Sherhan Wan Ilyas, the hospital is in dire need of specialist doctors in various fields.

This, he said, is for the purpose of handling emergency cases, especially for cases of surgical delivery.

In addition, he said, the hospital also needed an additional 110 staff to launch daily operations at the hospital.

So far, added Dr. Wan Sherhan, Semporna Hospital has 271 existing staff.

“However, the current number of staff is not sufficient because according to records, in a year we receive 23,000 patients in this hospital.

“Among those who seek treatment here are those who have suffered critical injuries.

“Meanwhile, we also recorded the number of those who gave birth in this hospital as much as 1,200 in a year,” he said.

Therefore, Dr Wan Sherhan said that there is a need for specialists such as physicians, emergency specialists, intensive care specialists, gynecologists and others.

In the meantime, in relation to the Bum-Bum Island Health Clinic, James said that the daily operation of the clinic was affected by the emergence of problems that needed to be overcome as soon as possible.

According to him, among the problems faced by the clinic are water and electricity supply problems, as well as wildlife threats.

“Therefore, we request action from the Wildlife Department to be able to take appropriate action immediately to overcome this problem,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Sulabayan Community Development Leader (PPM), Datuk Hajan Gurimbang said that electricity and water facilities at Jeti Balimbang, Bum-Bum Island are very much needed.
