TANJUNG ARU: With the donation of RM50,000 from the Rotary Club of Changi, Singapore, in support of the just completed fund-raising cycling event dubbed Tour de Peninsula East Coast, Persatuan Hemodialisis Kinabalu, Sabah (PHKS) has been able to acquire a new dialysis machine to meet the growing demand for treatment.
The facility came together with a dialysis chair, a stainless steel table and some hemodialysis medical supplies.
President of the Rotary Club of Changi, Eugene Yio, who led a delegation to visit the Society’s Dialysis Centre here in conjunction with the 39th Anniversary Celebration of the Rotary Club of Likas Bay, launched the use of the equipment, witnessed by the Chairman of Persatuan Hemodialisis Kinabalu, Sabah, Lim Heok Chye and Past District Governor (District 3310) Datuk Lee Chuen Wan from the Rotary Club of Likas Bay.
Among those who attended the occasion were the Society’s Vice-Chairman Monica Chang, Committee Members, staff nurses and Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Likas Bay. Also present were the epic riders who accomplished their unprecedented mission recently – Frank Yapp, George Ligunjang and Terry Ryman from Seeni Sana Veteran Cyclist Team.
Briefing the visiting group, Lim said some 90 patients had access to dialysis treatment at the dialysis centre for the last 17 years of operation. Currently, the centre is treating 35 patients mostly referred by Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr Kenneth Wu, a panel doctor, and Perkeso (Social Security Organisation).
According to Lim, PHKS is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Health for a licence to operate 18 dialysis machines on a daily basis by 2023.
“Currently, the Centre is running with 10 dialysis machines,” he said.
PHKS is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) registered on August 26, 2004 under the Societies Act 1966. Its dialysis centre was officially launched on November 14, 2005. It is also registered as a member of the National Renal Registry (Malaysian Society of Nephrology).
