KOTA KINABALU: Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu. Mr Liang Caide welcomed the establishment of the Asia Mediation Centre (AMC) which is headquartered in Sabah, the first and only centre for mediation services and professional accreditation in East Malaysia.

He said the establishment of the AMC will provide a more convenient way to resolve conflicts and disputes in terms of international commercial cooperation.

“This positive move implies that more international mediation forces familiar with commercial laws and well-versed in business practices will be introduced to Sabah, and working together to build a professional, efficient and convenient commercial dispute mediation mechanism which effectively responds to the needs of market entities for diversified rights relief and dispute resolution methods.

“It is of great significance in promoting the formation of a legalised, international and convenient business environment as well as a fair, unified and efficient market environment,” Liang said in a statement on Friday.

According to him, with the continuous advancement of the The Belt and Road Initiative in recent years, more and more Chinese companies have come to Sabah for business and investment, and the pragmatic cooperation between China and Sabah in the trading sector has achieved fruitful results.

The Consul-General, however, pointed out that at the same time, friction and disputes caused by differences in institutional mechanisms, legal systems and business practices are nevertheless inevitable, and traditional litigation or arbitration methods are time-consuming and laborious.

Liang congratulated the AMC under the dynamic leadership of its Founder cum Director, Josephine Hadikusumo on the organisation’s initiative in spearheading the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Asia Mediation Centre and its partners covering the four continents of South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The MOU sets out the framework for an Alliance on Mediation Standards and a Cross-Recognition of Accreditation.

He expressed confidence that the signing of the MOU can further develop the unique advantages of professional mediation institutions and forces in handling commercial disputes, and serve The Belt and Road market players better in dispute resolution.

“The MOU on the Alliance for Mediation Standards will certainly facilitate The Belt and Road development, especially the in-depth development of business cooperation between China and Sabah,” said Liang who witnessed the signing ceremony on Wednesday.
