Sabah regulator seizes over RM300,000 worth of uncertified electrical goods in Kota Kinabalu raid

KOTA KINABALU: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) has seized electrical equipment worth more than RM300,000 ($XX) from two premises in Kota Kinabalu for failing to comply with state safety regulations, the agency said on Thursday.

The items confiscated did not bear safety certification labels issued by SIRIM, Malaysia’s national standards and quality body.

The operation, described by the regulator as its first of its kind, involved 23 enforcement officers from ECoS and four officers from SIRIM Berhad, acting as the conformity assessment body recognised by the commission.

ECoS Chief Operating Officer Ridwan Saham said the raid followed the issuance of a prohibition notice in December 2025.

“Despite the notice, several premises were still found to be non-compliant and continued to sell electrical equipment that does not meet legal requirements,” he said in a statement.

The enforcement action was carried out under Regulation 107 of the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024. Under subregulation 110(2), those found guilty of selling non-compliant consumer electrical equipment face a fine of up to RM20,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

ECoS said enforcement efforts would be intensified to safeguard consumer safety and ensure compliance with state energy laws.

Established on Jan. 10, 2023, ECoS is a statutory body under the Sabah state government and serves as the regulator for the energy sector within the Chief Minister’s portfolio. Its mandate includes ensuring secure, sustainable, affordable and accessible energy supply across the state.
