KOTA KINABALU: Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu has partnered with Value Food, Malaysia’s homegrown surplus food marketplace, in a move aimed at reducing food waste while providing the local community with access to premium meals at affordable prices.

Under the collaboration, surplus food from selected dining outlets at the hotel will be packed daily into “Surprise Bags” and offered for purchase through the Value Food mobile application. The initiative enables consumers to enjoy high-quality culinary offerings at discounted prices while preventing perfectly edible food from ending up in landfills.

The partnership marks the first initiative of its kind for Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu and supports Marriott International’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360, reflecting the hotel’s commitment to responsible business practices and environmental sustainability.

Value Food Co-founder Hari Nagendran said the collaboration demonstrates how food and beverage (F&B) establishments can seamlessly integrate sustainability into their daily operations without compromising quality.

“Value Food is a movement where everyone benefits. By partnering with Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu, we are showing that perfectly good food can be enjoyed rather than discarded.

“We are excited to provide the Kota Kinabalu community with an easy way to enjoy quality meals, save money and contribute to protecting the environment. This partnership represents our first step into Sabah, and we look forward to welcoming more local merchants onto the platform in the near future,” he said in a statement.

The initiative is expected to encourage greater public participation in reducing food waste while promoting sustainable consumption, in line with growing environmental awareness among consumers and businesses alike.
