KUALA PENYU: As part of its continuous corporate zakat commitment, Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) officially handed over Sekolah Agama Rakyat Al Ikhlas Kampung Kilugus to Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Negeri Sabah (JHEAINS) on Saturday, 13 December 2025 – marking the successful completion of a community-focused education initiative funded through BPMB’s zakat contribution.
Through a RM1.12 million zakat allocation disbursed in 2022, BPMB laid the foundation for the construction and initial operations of the school, enabling it to provide religious education for more than 200 students from Kampung Kilugus, Kampung Melikai and Kampung Sinapokan in Kuala Penyu, Sabah. This initiative addressed the longstanding transportation challenges by offering a safer and more accessible environment for learning – supporting the moral, social and educational development of the surrounding communities.
“BPMB is proud to support initiatives that deliver tangible, long-term benefits to communities. Sekolah Agama Rakyat Kampung Kilugus is an excellent example of how targeted zakat funding, applied through thoughtful initiative selection and impact measurement can open new educational opportunities for the next generation. This school not only offers physical infrastructure but also provides a foundation for character building and future development for our children and for Malaysia,” said Dato’ Muzaffar Hisham, Group Chief Executive Officer of BPMB.
The initiative was selected through BPMB’s impact-based assessment approach, ensuring that every zakat contribution is channelled to generate meaningful, long-term outcomes, including community upliftment, job creation, innovation and direct support for those in need. In line with this approach, BPMB’s zakat contributions for 2025 have collectively supported numerous initiatives across Malaysia with a total value of RM12.5 million to-date, reflecting the Bank’s ongoing commitment to communities.
The handover ceremony was attended by Pn. Siti Zuraihan Binti Ag. Mohd Hussin, Deputy Director (Education) of JHEAINS, alongside representatives from Yayasan Ikhlas, BPMB’s strategic NGO partner for this initiative. The collaboration between BPMB, JHEAINS and Yayasan Ikhlas demonstrates how corporate – NGO
partnerships can foster sustainable social impact. By bringing this school to life, BPMB demonstrates how targeted social initiatives can transform communities and provide a foundation for a stronger, more resilient future
