TENOM: Efforts to improve breastfeeding practices in Sabah must move beyond simply encouraging mothers to do so and instead focus on building strong support systems that enable them to continue.
Sabah Minister of Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing, Datuk Julita Majungki, said that while awareness of the importance of breastfeeding has grown, many mothers continue to face challenges, including work commitments, family responsibilities and inadequate support.
“Our challenge is not merely to encourage mothers to breastfeed, but to ensure that every mother, regardless of her background or where she lives, receives the support she needs,” she said when officiating the Sabah State-Level World Breastfeeding Week Celebration and the 2026 Sabah Breastfeeding Support Group Members (AKSSI) Convention here on Thursday.
She said breastfeeding is not merely a nutritional issue, but provides babies with the best possible start in life through complete nutrition while supporting children’s health, contributing to the development of human capital, family wellbeing and Sabah’s future.
“The development of a state should not be measured solely by its physical or economic progress, but also by the quality of the generation we nurture from the very first day of life,” she said.
Julita said successful breastfeeding requires a shared commitment from families, employers, communities, healthcare workers and the government.
“True empowerment happens when women are given the time, space, protection and support to make the best choices for themselves and their children,” she said.
She expressed hope that every baby born in Sabah would have an equal opportunity to enjoy the best possible start in life through a strong support system for every mother.
